Transformers (2007)

4 stars out of 5.

My friend is a big Transformers fan and I thought it would be fun to see this on opening night (not the midnight show - the day after). It was quite a good show. Lots of action, decent story line and some pretty good robot action. Granted, there were some low points and silly moments. I suspect the movie was trying to appeal to a broad base, so it put in these moments. But these moments are fleeting - no Jar-Jar Binks mistakes. Overall, I enjoyed the ride and the adventure. It is a tad long, but I think it flowed pretty well. I would recommend for most men and women who like robots, cars and action movies.

As my previous comments probably may show (see Iron Man), you'd predict that I didn't like this movie.

And you'd be wrong. I LOATHED this movie. I couldn't believe how terrible it was. I mean, I loved Transformers when I was 5. And all of the sudden, Hollywood's expecting 50 million adults to become 5 years old--in every definition. Iron Man deserves multiple Oscars compared to this trash. The writing, the acting (which unfortunately has somehow brought us two new permanent stars--based entirely on looks), the bizarre plot and sequences, and did I mention the absolutely atrocious writing? Somehow we're all supposed to be wowed that a bunch of tough-looking trucks and cars turn into destructive robots--and this is all we need for a good movie? Talk about a movie's entire earnings made on the nostalgia from 50 million+ adults.

Is that really what movies have become? A bunch of digital effects? Why not just hire a huge team of computer graphic designers and animators to basically script out an entire movie? Oh, wait. That's exactly what Hollywood has done.

Does anyone think that the CGI Yoda is better than the original puppet from the original trilogy? Why is that?

I will say that Gollum is to this day the greatest character done by CGI. But for every Gollum, there's over a hundred terrible characters and ideas that show we're still in our infancy of convincing effects and writing from a digital point of view. Somewhere down the road in our lazy decadent civilization (I admit, I'm sounding extremely pessimistic and grumpy right now--I'm at work), people just might figure out that great poetic writing, character development and original thinking is what makes great movies/plays/shows.

Isn't it the middle of the night? Why are you at work? Again, you've got to have low expectations and be in the mood for mindless entertainment. I was kind of nostalgic for my old Transformers days and this movie was fun. Granted, I don't watch more than 2 action movies per year. Sometimes just one. Otherwise I just start rolling my eyes.

Yes, I work graveyard. Thus, I'm allowed to surf the 'net and write obnoxious comments on blogs. Good advice on the action movies. I think I'll allow myself 2 a year. Max.
