3 stars out of 5.
If you did not know that they made a third installment of the Anne series into a movie, you are probably not alone. I had no idea either. For Christmas, Sheralie received the complete set, and since we had never seen this movie, we decided to give it a try.
Since L.M. Montgomery had written several books that followed the first two movies, I figured this movie would focus on one of these books. At the very least, it might be a compilation of a few of them. However, I was surprised to learn that the movie totally departed from the books. Not that I remembered reading the books from having read them 20 some years ago, but I did know enough to remember that this movie was not it.
The movie is set as WW1 is underway. Anne and Gilbert are still engaged (just how long is this engagement?) and planning on getting married. But the war beckons, and soon both Gilbert and Anne are deeply involved. The movie takes some rather strange story lines. They are somewhat entertaining though, but a bit long. You want to find out what happens, but you don't really want to invest three hours in the project.
Overall, I would generally stick to the first two movies if you need to watch a chick flick for date night. Otherwise I would try to convince your date that Braveheart would be much more entertaining than Anne of Green Gables III.
