Dan in Real Life (2007)

4 stars out of 5

Dan in Real Life stars everyone's favorite Office manager, Steve Carrell, so I had to see it. It didn't look enticing enough to see in the theaters, but soon after the DVD release, I got it on Netflix.

I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know if Carrell's zaniness would be palatable over a 100 minute film, but he was not nearly as zany as his Office character. He still has some of his characteristic goofiness, but he played his character very well and I thought he was terrific. The story is pretty good, though it drags a little sometimes.

The overall themes were on family and love. It mixed together quite well. I would recommend it to all guys as their next "chick flick" movie because it centers around a love story, but still has Steve Carrell and gives you some solid laughs.

I think Steve Carell is underrated as an actor (if that makes any sense). Obviously, almost everybody loves him, but he really turns any movie he's in to gold--or at least makes the movie semi-interesting, like Evan Almighty or Get Smart. He really has a lot of variety and color in his acting and timing, something I feel Will Ferrell doesn't possess. Ferrell seems to be extremely one-dimensional, albeit a very strong dimension.

As far as The Office is concerned, that show actually is filled with a lot of very mediocre actors, except maybe Rainn Wilson. Some episodes I feel like some of the major characters just don't show up, but it's so well-written that makes it the top show on television today. But Carell gives and gives to every scene he's in, and doesn't seem to ever have an off day.
