Scheisshaus Luck (2008)
4.5 stars out of 5.
This is the story of Pierre Berg, an 18-year old Frenchmen, rounded up and sent to Auschwitz and various other concentration camps. Berg is not a Jew, but in the wrong place at the wrong time. I found the story compelling and well told. It is a bit vulgar at times (the title should have tipped me off) but on the whole I thought it was an honest account that was worth reading.
Compared to other Holocaust accounts, I think this account offers a unique non-Jewish perspective. Pierre is also an atheist and a young man when he experiences the trauma of Auschwitz, and this colors his experience. I would recommend to most readers, but you should realize that it will not be a pretty read.
