The Blue Sweater by Jacqueline Novogratz

5 stars out of 5

The Blue Sweater is basically a memoir from the author that follows her from her early days at Citibank to development work in Africa, the World Bank, Stanford Business School, India, Pakistan, and so on. She has lived a very interesting life and devoted it to many good causes. The book alternates between sharing stories of her philanthropic work, and her ideas of what works and what doesn't work in the world of philanthropy.

I enjoyed it very much. It is somewhat like "Three Cups of Tea" in that both authors focused on development/aid work, but Novogratz has a wide variety of experiences and some good training to boot, while the "Three Cups of Tea" author is very earnest, but has to learn a lot of lessons on the way (or maybe Three Cups of Tea just focuses more on the learning part). In any event, it is not a gripping read, as each chapter covers a different episode in her life (with the exception of several chapters on Rwanda), but every chapter was fascinating and insightful. I am hopeful that funds like hers and the Gates Foundation will bring more effective development to aid to the billions of very poor people around the globe. I highly recommend it to all interested people.
