I was surprised to find out that there was a sequel to God's Army. Well, it's not really a sequel, but it's by the same director of God's Army and covers the same topic - Mormon missionaries.
The story focuses on a couple of missionaries operating in Santa Monica, CA. I really liked the character development. In a perfect world, missionaries would be the perfect role models, but these missionaries are real - they make many hard decisions - some of which are good and some are not so good. The plot develops around three people they are teaching/helping - a gang member, an actress and a homeless person.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with some good plot turns and good drama. Overly dramatic at times? Maybe so, but a good story and message to tell. I would recommend for most mature audiences. It is probably not appropriate for kids. If you are not Mormon, I think you could still appreciate the story.

Do you remember seeing God's Army (1) with me? We saw it at Movies 8. That was the first time I saw it. I can't remember why we saw it together. I enjoyed it a lot.
God's Army 2 was just too much. Dutcher trying too hard, trying to say something powerful that just falls way too awkwardly short. I like the ideals that he (used to) stand for, but he needs to stop preaching and taking himself so stinkin' seriously and have some light movies or side interest shows.
Hmm, I vaguely remember seeing it with you, but I can't think of why we would be seeing this movie together. It came out in 1999 - were you a freshman at BYU then?
I'm sorry you didn't like #2 - I thought it was fine, though I do agree it tried too hard in parts.
